Matthew McConaughey has made a name for himself as a versatile actor, known for his roles in films like Dallas Buyers Club and Interstellar. However, his journey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) was not without its twists and turns.
Before joining the MCU in Deadpool & Wolverine, McConaughey had turned down a significant role. He was initially approached by director James Gunn to play Ego the Celestial in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, McConaughey declined this opportunity in favor of a different villainous role.
The role that McConaughey chose over the MCU was in Stephen King’s The Dark Tower adaptation. He portrayed Randall Flagg, a recurring villain in King’s novels. While the film itself did not achieve the success that Marvel’s projects have, McConaughey’s performance was praised.
Despite his initial pass on the MCU, McConaughey eventually found his way into the franchise. In Deadpool & Wolverine, he voiced Cowboypool, a Wild West-themed variant of the titular anti-hero. His iconic Texan drawl made him instantly recognizable, even though he only provided the voiceover.
The casting of McConaughey as Cowboypool was a result of Ryan Reynolds’ enthusiasm. Reynolds, who initially voiced the character, felt that McConaughey’s voice would be a better fit. His persistence led to McConaughey agreeing to the role.
While McConaughey’s MCU journey may have taken a detour, his decision to prioritize the The Dark Tower role ultimately led him to a different, yet equally interesting, character. His involvement in Deadpool & Wolverine showcased his versatility and added another layer to his impressive career.
