“Agatha Series Finale Review 2024: What It Means for the MCU” Agatha: Darkhold Diaries has been a wild ride and I was not expecting that. Mysticism, ancient lore and MCU twists. Now that episodes 8 and 9 are out and the series is done, fans are divided on the finale. While the show brought its own flavor, some fans are feeling like Marvel is rehashing old ground without moving the stories forward. Watching the final episodes I was hooked on some of it and disappointed by the repetition of themes Marvel is revisiting.
We are left with more questions than answers, from missing characters like Mephisto to Agatha’s powers. Marvel is keeping us in suspense but for some fans it’s frustrating. Despite my complaints Agatha has a place in the MCU and I’ll keep coming back for more.
A Closer Look at Agatha in the MCU
Will “Agatha All Along” Season 2 Happen? Everything We Know Agatha has always been a complex character rooted in Marvel lore with connections to powerful mystical artifacts and beings like the Darkhold. The series teased several key Marvel characters without showing them fully—most notably Mephisto who fans have been speculating about for years. I get it, fan expectations vs narrative pacing but Marvel’s repeated teases without payoffs can get frustrating.
So Marvel not showing Mephisto raises questions. Maybe budget constraints and they couldn’t introduce more characters. But not showing this big character left a hole in what could have been a great plot. According to an IGN source “Marvel’s continuous teases without follow through are wearing thin for some fans.”
Recurring Themes: Marvel’s Lack of Originality
One of my complaints, and many fans, is Marvel’s habit of reusing themes. In this series much of the plot feels like a rehash of old stories instead of new ones. Agatha’s power grab is a central plot in WandaVision and here it’s just rehashed without much evolution. I liked the consistency of Agatha’s character motivation but I can’t help but feel Marvel is stuck in a loop and relying too much on old stories.
Marvel’s characters trying to use powers for personal gain is getting stale without further exploration of their motivations. Agatha could have had a more full arc if they had dug deeper into her sorceress who has lost everything. Maybe Marvel is working on diversifying their future stories as seen in the 2025 trailer. Agatha’s Future in the MCU
Agatha’s journey was full of unanswered questions. The series teased her ability to create her own children like Wanda but we saw no follow up. Marvel is leaving some threads open like Agatha’s manipulation of young witches and the unresolved lore around the Darkhold. This lack of closure leaves a sense of incompleteness.
What’s Next for Agatha, Wanda and the Mystical MCU
Marvel is teasing more content around Agatha, Wanda and other mystical characters. Wanda’s legacy in the MCU is still strong even as her character is changing. Fans think Wanda like Agatha may not be fully gone as Marvel rarely lets go of characters that quickly. So we may see more of these characters in upcoming series or films like Wonder Man or Avengers: Doomsday.
Wanda’s return whether as Scarlet Witch or reincarnated into a new body could add more layers. As we all know in the MCU characters don’t really die. The recent events could mean the Scarlet Witch’s influence will rise again or she’ll return in a new form. Marvel’s way of storytelling is heroes evolve and adapt. I for one can’t wait to see how they tie Agatha’s story to the larger MCU.
Agatha: Darkhold Diaries is a big part of the MCU but not without its problems. From not showing Mephisto to reusing themes it’s clear Marvel has some work to do. But by setting up future mystical characters and storylines the series finds its place in the Marvel Universe. With Wonder Man and Avengers: Doomsday coming up Marvel has a lot of opportunities to build on this and take it to new levels.
