Last year, writer Phillip Kennedy Johnson introduced a thrilling new addition to the Marvel Universe in his Incredible Hulk run—Sergeant Sal Romero, also known as Ghost Rider ‘44, a World War II Spirit of Vengeance who waged a fiery war against the Axis powers. This December, Johnson returns with the origin story in Hellhunters, a five-issue limited series illustrated by Adam Gorham, known for his gritty and action-packed work on Immortal Hulk and Star Wars: Darth Vader.
Ghost Rider ‘44: A Hellish War Machine Set during WWII, Hellhunters follows the supernatural transformation of Sergeant Sal Romero. After parachuting into Nazi-occupied Europe, Romero comes face-to-face with Felix Bruckner, a Nazi officer transformed by an unspeakable evil. Their fateful encounter leaves Romero reborn as Ghost Rider ‘44, tasked with exacting vengeance not only on the Nazis but on the demonic forces threatening humanity. Romero’s hellfire-fueled journey will see him teaming up with Marvel’s most badass wartime heroes—including Wolverine, Nick Fury, Peggy Carter, Bucky Barnes, and Soldier Supreme from Jason Aaron’s Avengers.
As Johnson explains, Ghost Rider ‘44 quickly became a fan-favorite character: “We knew the ‘War Devil’ arc wouldn’t be his last appearance. Now, with overwhelming fan response, we’re giving Marvel fans the full origin story of the bloodiest, scariest Nazi-killer to come out of WWII: the Hellhunters.”
An Action-Packed Horror Adventure Artist Adam Gorham is pushing his creative limits with this project, blending horror, heroism, and pulp action into what he describes as a “gritty adventure” for readers. His visceral, dynamic art will bring brutal combat and supernatural terror to life on every page. The book promises to deliver gruesome battles and hair-raising confrontations as Ghost Rider ‘44 and his team fight to stop Bruckner’s demonic army.
Marvel fans can look forward to covers by Jonas Scharf and a variant by Taurin Clarke, adding to the visual excitement of the series.
