Marvel fans, meet Cassandra Nova! The newest villain to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe and she’s unlike any you’ve seen before.
Played by the talented Emma Corrin [1], Cassandra Nova is the telepathic twin sister of Professor Charles Xavier. This isn’t your typical sibling rivalry though. Cassandra is a mutant with immense telepathic powers and a twisted agenda [1].
Fans of the X-Men comics will recognize Cassandra Nova from her debut in NEW X-MEN (2001) #114 by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely [1]. The film stays true to the comics, pitting Cassandra against Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) in an epic showdown [1].
The filmmakers knew they needed a special actor to take on this complex character. Executive producer Wendy Jacobson says they “wanted someone who could hold their own against Deadpool and Wolverine” [1]. They found that person in Emma Corrin.
Finding Inspiration in Unexpected Places
Corrin drew inspiration from some surprising sources to develop their portrayal of Cassandra Nova. They credit Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka and Christoph Waltz’s Hans Landa for influencing their performance [1].
More Than Just Mind Games
While Cassandra Nova is a powerful telepath, her menace goes beyond just mind control [1]. Corrin describes her as “unpredictable” and “weirdly inviting” [1]. This creates a character that’s both terrifying and strangely fascinating.
Transformation into a Comic Book Villain
Corrin says they truly understood the character when they donned the full costume, complete with a bald cap and Cassandra’s signature beige coat [1]. This transformation helped them embody the character’s physicality and presence.
Corrin admits to finding empathy for Cassandra Nova despite her evil ways [1]. They hint at a tragic backstory that may explain her motivations.
Deadpool & Wolverine hit theaters July 26, 2024 [1]. Don’t miss your chance to see this new villain and the epic battle between her, Deadpool, and Wolverine!
